About the two cameras, the first thing you notice is that compared to the past, Nikon has overturned the “values of strength” of the two sensors. While the first was the D3 to have a superior sensor (in version D3x, since the sensor of the D700 was virtually the same as the D3s), now the D800 has a sensor with a resolution of more than double the present on D4.

Because it was made this choice? Probably to differentiate the two product lines, as in previous years the D700 alone seems to have sold more of the D3s and D3x combined. The differences between the three were certainly not abyssal, and many photographers have preferred to spend something cheaper to buy a D700 that, all in all, ensures quality results, however, and not so distant from those obtainable with a D3s or x.
In the case of the D800 and D4, the difference should be clearly visible. Those who need to have a fast camera in focus and continuous shooting, will be almost forced to turn to the D4, which with its 10 fps outclasses the D800 that fps should be able to express just 4. Also be considered even the greater sensitivity of the sensor that handles focus, which allows you to also use objectives whose brightness from f/8: almost a record, even if the real benefits will see them only who uses teleconverter and old objectives.

The same applies to anyone who wants high quality high ISO shots. Having only 16 million pixels on a sensor FX allows you to limit the problems caused by digital noise pretty well. Have 36 instead, as happens for D800 if specifications will all be confirmed, will be much more problematic, and probably we’ll have slightly less sharp images and precise. The problem of the D800 is that beyond this value will be greatly amplified noise than that present in the D4, which in this sector is played most of his chance to succeed. Do not underestimate the strength of shutter, which for the D4 is made of Kevlar and carbon fiber, and designed to withstand cycles of 400,000 while shooting for the D800 the expected duration should be exactly half.

Though, frankly, all in all I don’t think the D4 will be a huge success. After all, the D800 promises spectacular photos in bright light, and those taken with little light … well, maybe just use a bit of creativity, a powerful flash and some good photo editing program. Maybe just a nice image resampling from 36 to 18 or, why not, 12 megapixels. More than enough for at least 90% of the things that a photographer can do with an SLR
